Booleans and align

Booleans combine two or more shapes into one new path: union, subtract, intersect or exclude. The align buttons beside them line layers up with each other, or a single layer with the canvas.

Do it in the editor: guided tour4 steps · about 2 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Select both circles

Drag a box on the canvas from an empty spot of the sky across both circles. Both are selected, and the bar at the top of the inspector offers the align and boolean buttons.

  2. Line them up

Click Align vertical centers at the top of the inspector. With several layers selected they align to each other: the two circles now sit at the same height.

  3. Subtract

Click Subtract, in the same bar. The upper shape is cut out of the bottom one: one new path called Subtract, with the moon's colour, in the moon's place.

  4. Centre it on the canvas

Click Align horizontal centers. With one layer selected, it aligns to the canvas: the new moon moves to the middle.

Good to know. Union combines the shapes, Intersect keeps only their overlap, and Exclude keeps where they don't overlap. The shapes are combined as they look at the playhead, and undo brings the originals back. Distributing needs three layers or more. The right-click menu has the same commands, under Boolean and Align.
