Moving around the canvas

Zoom in to work on the small parts, move the view to where you need it, and fit the whole artboard back in. The view is only how you see the canvas: it changes nothing in your animation.

Do it in the editor: guided tour5 steps · about 2 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Zoom in

Click + at the bottom right of the canvas, beside the zoom percentage: each click zooms in a step, around the middle of the view. − zooms out; Ctrl + and Ctrl - do the same.

  2. Zoom at the pointer

Hold Ctrl and scroll up over the cat in the window: the canvas zooms in where the pointer is, and the point under it stays put. Scroll down to zoom out.

  3. Move the view

Hold Space and drag on the canvas: the view moves with the pointer, whatever tool is on. The Hand tool at the bottom of the tools (H) drags it without Space, and scrolling moves it too. A tap of Space, without a drag, still plays and pauses.

  4. Zoom to a layer

Click Cat in the Layers panel, then press 2: the view zooms in until the selected layers fill the canvas.

  5. Fit the artboard

Click the zoom percentage, then Fit, or press 1: the whole artboard fits the canvas again. The same menu has a slider and a box for any zoom, Fit selection and Zoom 100% (0).

Good to know. Double-clicking the Hand tool fits the artboard too. The zoom goes from 2% to 3200%. The middle mouse button drags the view with any tool, and Shift + scroll moves it sideways. When the window or a panel changes size, a fitted view fits again; at any other zoom the artwork stays where it is.
