GETTING STARTED

The editor at a glance

A quick look around the five areas you work in: the tools on the left, the canvas in the middle, the Layers panel, the inspector on the right and the timeline at the bottom. Each step asks for one small thing in one of them.

Do it in the editor: guided tour6 steps · about 3 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Pick a tool

The tools are in the narrow column on the left. Press M for the Rectangle tool: it lights up in the shapes button. A button with a small triangle holds more tools: press and hold it to see them.

  2. Draw on the canvas

The canvas in the middle holds the artboard, your picture. Drag on it to draw a rectangle. A drawing tool stays on after each shape: press V or Esc to go back to Select.

  3. Select in Layers

The Layers panel lists every layer, the frontmost at the top; a padlock means it is locked. Click Sun to select it: it is selected on the canvas too.

  4. Change it in the inspector

The inspector on the right shows everything about the selected layer. Type 170 in Position Y, in Transforms, and press Enter: the sun moves down, behind the hills.

  5. Scrub the timeline

The timeline at the bottom shows what moves: the cloud already has a Position track. Drag the red playhead along the time ruler and the cloud drifts with it.

  6. Export it

On the right of the top bar are Undo, Redo, the keyboard shortcuts and Export. Click Export: the Export window previews the animation and makes it one animated .svg file (or an image, a video or a GIF).

Good to know. The ☰ menu at the top left has the file commands and everything else (Edit, Element, Animate, View, Help). F1 lists every keyboard shortcut.
